Why a Sustainability Hackathon?

We live in a world defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (It’s become a trendy managerial acronym: VUCA). Economics, Management, Finance and Business education, in particular, has been critiqued for failing to train learners with the skills that firms will need to operate in an increasingly uncertain world. Increased urgency for academic institutions to take positive actions in addressing Sustainable Development issues is supported by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Hence, the following became the priority areas for  LSE and ISBF’s Sustainability Teams:

  • the need of the hour for earth-literate leaders and responsible managers;
  • recognition of the interconnectedness of sustainability challenges which span beyond the triple-bottom line of social, environmental and financial systems;
  • having an unavoidable responsibility (to address sustainability related problems) as leaders of future businesses
  • striving to unlock the vision of an applicative interdisciplinary education enshrined in the National Education Policy, 2020.

This churning is what has led to the Inaugural LSE-ISBF Sustainability Hackathon, 2022- where premier city schools lock horns and attempt to pitch Hacks to real problems being faced by organisations today.
