We have missed you, Dearest Reader! We were on the cusp of the previous edition of The Inquirer when the pandemic threw a spanner in all our collective works. An entire academic session, several lockdowns, challenges and unlocks later, we felt it was about time we shared with you our attempts at dealing with some of these challenges successfully.

The Student Council at ISBF is already leading the way fabulously through online student activities like Humans of ISBF, Talaash and Deconstructing Roots which have given a wonderful meaning to “college life” in these past online months. The same can be said of co-curricular activities such as the recently concluded Panel Discussion on post-COVID career and industry trends as part of ISBF’s first careers workshop, iASPIRE, and several Distinguished Public Lectures. We are all geared up to welcome students into the new academic session 2020-21, with the Orientation Ceremony scheduled for 13 September and online classes thereafter, until educational institutions are permitted to open up for students. We are open for staff and visitors though, with requisite safety measures in place, should you wish to visit our campus and our hostel.

This is already one of the greatest experiments in the history of education and institutions, and ISBF is excited to have you on this collective journey, as we inch towards the crest of this wave! Read on to find out more, especially how along with EdTech businesses flourishing, the E-Sports industry has been a key beneficiary of this situation! As always, we try to share some interesting nuggets in the Quiz, this time dedicated to all things COVID-19.
These are unprecedented times, and potentially a watershed point on the ever flattening curve that is the concern around technology supplanting classrooms! We have debated ourselves hoarse the last decade bouncing ideas off each other at multiple symposia, contemplating ways and means to combat the threat of this insidious enemy that we made technology out to be, apparently out with the single-minded objective of bidding us, educators, adieu.
And then the novel coronavirus threw a spanner in that rhetoric. We are in the throes of what seems like a global experiment in achieving a semblance of urgent verisimilitude with physical co-presence. I see a silver lining here. The slow pace of change in academic institutions globally is lamentable, with centuries-old, lecture-based approaches to teaching, entrenched institutional biases, and outmoded classrooms. COVID-19 has become a catalyst for educational institutions worldwide to search for innovative solutions executed to varying degrees of (in-)convenience in a relatively short period of time.
At ISBF, we conducted the Annual Examination in the last week of March without any hassle, entirely online, within a week after the lockdown was suddenly announced. On an operational execution front, it was an unequivocal hurrah. Instructors have had to learn how to use online platforms, adapt their teaching methods, maintain student engagement and find new ways to evaluate students. Traditional in-person classroom learning, we swiftly realised, will have to be substituted by novel learning modalities – running the gamut from live broadcasts to ‘educational influencers’ to virtual reality experiences. These are exciting times to be an educator!

Students have been beneficiaries, too. Aside from gaining obvious perks, like not having to commute, being able to study at their own pace, and utilizing a quieter working environment, they stand a chance at gaining extremely useful skills, such as IT, adaptability, and a greater sense of working within a digital space.
All is not rosy though. Learners need a little empathy, and that is where I fear we might be missing the forest for the trees in the rush to respond effectively to the pandemic. Remote learning has already begun showing its ugly wrinkles. A lot of my students have told me of their compromised learning experience in the absence of accountability. If it’s not their attention being consumed by the technological paraphernalia surrounding their attempts at writing examinations with online invigilation, it is about battling ennui to show up for online discussion sessions. 
The main disadvantage is not always having a teacher on hand to give an instant answer to a question. From having received preliminary feelers from my students on this assumed delivery-gap, the classroom setting itself seems conducive to familiar methods of learning. Going entirely online disrupts this familiar learning space, puncturing their psychological contract struck with the lead learner, i.e., the instructor. Maintaining continuity in one’s learning journey soothes another problematic aspect of the contemporary learning experience - diversity of learning styles. This ‘novel’ experiment adds yet another variable to that already rife inequation.
But what will this unforeseeable future look like? Suler, notably, spoke of the Online Disinhibition Effect, wherein physical barriers to feeling empowered, such as age, race, gender, skin tone, are relatively relaxed online, allowing a more authentic expression of the self. The associated social psychological phenomenon of dis-inhibition may well sound the death-knell for transmitted learning making it imperative for instructors to allow for more open discussion forums and reduced power distance between learner and lead learner. I imagine a novel digital learning etiquette emerging, setting new expectations of both parties. From unshackled students, the future will expect questions to be asked without fear of labels in a safer space. From adaptive instructors, especially digital immigrants, it will expect familiarity with platforms and even newer student-engagement tricks up our sleeves so that our digital natives continue to see us as relevant.

iASPIRE - An EMF Careers Workshop

In July 2020, ISBF conducted iASPIRE, its first ever immersive careers summer workshop for Class XII students interested in Economics, Management and Finance. This was a 16-hour workshop spanning four days across the first two weekends of July. The workshop comprised sessions exploring the 'why' of studying these disciplines from a careers perspective, conducted by ISBF faculty members, eight hour-long deep-dive sessions on individual careers like actuarial science, data science, investment banking, consulting, marketing and entrepreneurship, conducted by top business and policy experts, as well as LSE faculty members, and finally sessions on impression management, networking in the digital world and productivity tools, all designed to leave them better informed and equipped to pursue the careers of their choice. iAspirants were also invited to a panel discussion on post-COVID career and industry trends, which had eminent speakers from Coca Cola, Nielsen and the UK India Business Council.

Blaize, the dance society of ISBF started the "Deconstructing Roots" series on their instagram page. This dance series represents their roots and passion towards dance. They named it so because it incorporates most of the dance forms they've learnt and to remind themselves that no matter where one ends up, one should always remember and be grateful for their roots, culture and background. Girl-up, Zia

Girl Up Zia is a testimony to the lively environment of ISBF where students are not only exposed to world-class business education but are also given the opportunity to explore their true potential and are encouraged to become empathetic humans. Formed on the lines of the umbrella initiative by the UN Foundation, Girl up Zia spreads awareness about issues related to women and speaks up for women empowerment. It has conducted various live online sessions with eminent women from industry, such as Ritu Dalmia on Pride Month, Rushabh Turakhia, a TEDx speaker, and Anvesha Vijay on mental health, to name some.

Xenia 2020 - For a Sustainable Future

ISBF hosted the twelfth edition of its annual inter-college cultural festival, Xenia, on 21st February 2020. The theme for this year was sustainability, and the festival's byline dedicated it 'For a Sustainable Future'. For the first time in recent years, the festival was hosted outside ISBF, at the amphitheater in the centre of Ansal Plaza, Khel Gaon, Delhi. Several competitions were conducted during the day, including Nukkad Natak, Step Up and Battle of the Bands, and they attracted participation from colleges across the length and breadth of the national capital, making the event a resounding success!

ISBF Model United Nations Conference 2019

The two-day event held on 9th & 10th November 2019 saw students from universities across the Delhi NCR region debate on the topic ‘The implementation of SDG 13 with special emphasis on moving towards a plastic-free future’. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) committee focused on the elimination of 'Single-Use Plastic', and 'Sustainable use of other forms of plastic', the United Nations Security Council committee reviewed the principles of self-defense and the use of force in the digital era, while the United Nations General Assembly focused on renewing emphasis on global non-proliferation attempts with an emphasis on the Korean peninsula.

Distinguished Public Lecture Series
The Distinguished Public Lecture Series is an attempt to invite highly reputed academicians and industry mentors to the ISBF campus to deliver talks on contemporary issues related to management, finance and economics. These fora provide an ideal opportunity for the eminent speakers to interact with the faculty pool and students for sharing their knowledge, experience and views concerning emerging global business trends. These talks enable students to understand the challenges encountered in the modern era and the acumen, innovative business practices, skill sets required for overcoming these challenges. Faculty members, teachers, students from other colleges are also invited to attend such talks.

Careers Team

The session started with the successful conduct of the first-ever, 3-month long Placement Module, designed to upskill students and further enhance their employability. It comprised job description and orientation sessions conducted by industry experts, soft skill building, training on areas like resume-writing, email writing, LinkedIn profile-building, aptitude test-taking and interviewing, and has shown remarkable results already. During the course of the session, students were also exposed to interviews and conversations with corporate stalwarts like Ms. Sonali Misra, India Head - Human Resources, Bain & Company, and Ms. Bhawna Dhawan, Head Human Resources South East Asia, Pladis Global.

Despite one of the most challenging years in living memory from an employment and placements perspective, the large majority of our graduates have been placed with leading companies like Royal and Sun Alliance (RSA), Insight Alpha, GoDaddy, KPMG and Moody's, and have begun their working lives following the completion of their final examinations.

Ann Wenger
School Counsellor, JBCN Parel, Mumbai
Being a school career and university counsellor has to be the best job in the world for personal fulfillment.  After decades of working in numerous international schools around the globe, working with Indian students at JBCN International School is the icing on the cake; talented, bright, multi-lingual, highly motivated, deeply rooted in family and culture and aspiring to the best educational opportunities possible for themselves. On top of that, this virus-spring has shown me the tenacity, courage, and flexibility these young people have shown and the true beauty and strength of their close-knit family relationships. Working at JBCN International School, Parel, with its first graduating class this past academic year has given me the opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of opening up a viable in-school counselling service and introducing new ideas about career choices and university opportunities to our JBCN families and to the school management.

It truly takes the teachers, peer group, enrichment cells, parents, counsellors, administrators, and management in a school working together to give students their best chance of successfully mapping their course through the maze of building a profile that will open up the best opportunities in a rapidly changing world. Many years of working in the area of adolescent psychology, IB teaching, career development, and college counselling has given me an appreciation of this critically important life-stage and necessity for early and insightful guidance.

Institutions such as Indian School of Business and Finance have become even more important now as Indian university education takes a new turn towards a more liberal arts approach; preparing students for a wider-based education as they meet the quickly changing job-market so different from yesterday and today’s workplace. Teaming up with universities from around the world, such as ISBF has done with London School of Economics, speaks to the forward-thinking of their management. Sharing of knowledge, philosophies of education, teaching/learning processes and experiences gives everyone a chance to create new and better educational platforms for Indian students and gives them the experience of rooting themselves in the business culture of India yet exposure and experience in the global economy. ISBF understands the importance of working closely with school counsellors to build trust and understanding about the program and opportunities it offers. Exposing students to their institution through the Playonomics Program has been a valuable and fun experience for our Year 11 and 12 students this past year and we hope to offer it to the Year 9 -12 JBCN students this academic year.
Swati Vats

Swati Vats has a rich experience of over 16 years as an educationist and Career counsellor. With a Master's in Psychology and a PG Diploma in counselling from NCERT, she is also Certified in Thomas Profiling from Thomas assessments (PPA-HJA) and Transactional analyst from TACET. Swati has played a variety of roles in the education industry and has worked proactively for both companies like CareersSmart, Educomp, Mafoi, IMS, and schools like Modern School, Barakhamba & Scottish High International. She is an IBDP examiner/ EE Supervisor and also handled successfully the additional responsibility of Associate DP Coordinator at her current school for two years. However, she is now focusing completely on on the dual responsibilities as College Guidance counsellor and IB Psychology instructor at Lancers International School, Gurgaon.

Alumni Spotlight

Malavika Mani started her ISBF journey in the year 2014 and pursued BSc (Hons) Economics & Finance. This programme receives complete academic direction from the London School of Economics, which is ranked 5th for Economics and 4th for Finance globally (QS Rankings). While at ISBF, she was an active member of the ISBF Media Hub and various other societies. She held many positions in the Student Council and was a key contributor to student life at ISBF.

After graduating in 2017, she went on to pursue MSc Economics at University College London (UCL), which is ranked 10th overall and 17th for Economics (QS) in the world. She then worked as Research Associate at The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and is currently pursuing a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, ranked 19th overall and 11th for Economics (QS) globally.
