What is a Bachelor of Business Administration(BBA)?
Bachelor of Business Administration or more commonly known as BBA is one of the most popular courses to study at an undergraduate level in India. BBA is a three-year degree programme and is open to students from all streams, be it science, commerce or arts. However, different universities may/or may not have some criteria for required subjects, depending on individual policies.
The Bachelor of Business Management course aims to make students familiar with management techniques and concepts that prepare them for managerial roles and entrepreneurship. Students are familiarised with various aspects of business administration and management through classroom lectures and other projects like internships, workshops and industry visits, guest lectures, corporate interactions and much more.
BBA is offered by numerous universities in India and abroad, however, there can be a difference in the nomenclature of the course itself. The different variants of Bachelor of Business Administration are Bachelor of Business Management or Bachelor of Business Studies. Essentially BBA, BBM and BBS are the similar courses when it comes to the course that is taught. The only difference is in the names of the courses.
What’s the Difference Between Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Management?
Both Bachelor in Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Management are commerce-oriented courses with a focus on management. The major difference between BBA and BBM is that of the nomenclature, concerning the curriculum there are technically no differences barring a few subjects here and there. The essence of the curriculum and aim of both the courses remain the same. The core components of both BBA and BBM courses include human resource management, marketing, organizational behaviour, international trade and business law.
BBA Eligibility Criteria and Entrance Exams
The eligibility criteria to pursue a BBA in India remains the same across all universities. However, some universities may demand the study of a particular subject in classes X and XII. The basic eligibility criteria are:
- Must have completed 10+2 level from a recognized educational board.
- A minimum aggregate score of 50% to 60% at 10+2 level of education.
Students who have appeared in class XII examinations and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply.
ISBF offers BSc(Hons) Business and Management and the eligibility criteria for the same are:
- a candidate must either have completed Class XII or be completing it
- Candidates from any stream, or studying any combination of subjects, may apply to BSc (Hons) Business & Management. But, they must have studied Mathematics up to Class X.
The eligibility criteria for universities abroad depend on the country and the university you are applying to. However, most countries require completion of senior secondary school examinations.
BBA Syllabus and Subjects
BBA, BBM and BBS are all similar and hence the subjects and syllabus offered are more or less similar. Majority of universities teach the following subjects as a part of their curriculum:

It is aimed at providing a broad understanding of the theory and practice of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management, both for non-specialist students and as a foundation for further study in the area. This course does not focus on the technical aspects but rather examines the basic principles and underlying concepts and how accounting statements and financial information can be used to improve the quality of decision-making.
- Business & Management in a Global Context
- The course provides an introduction to business and management with particular emphasis on their international dimension. This course specifically aims to give you a research-based grounding in the context of international business including globalising trends, formal and informal institutions, the political, economic, social, technological and legal issues and the resultant diversity of international business and much more.
- Introduction to Information Systems
- This course is intended to provide a broad introductory understanding of information systems, seen within organisational and societal contexts. The aim is to provide students with an appropriate balance of technical and organisational perspectives to serve as a basis for further study in the field.
The second-year subjects include:
- Introduction to Economics
- This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of economic analysis and reasoning and it is the course upon which subsequent, more specialised economics courses are based.
- Core Management Concepts
- The course covers the main areas of general management and the intellectual foundations of management concepts. It is the basis upon which more specialised functional management courses can be taken.
- Principles of Corporate Finance
- This course is aimed at students who are interested in understanding the principles of corporate finance. It provides a theoretical framework used to address issues in project appraisal and financing, payout policy, capital structure, mergers and acquisitions, equity offerings, and risk management. It provides students with the tools required for further studies in financial intermediation and investments.
- Elements of Social & Applied Psychology
- This course provides an overview of key areas of social psychology and their application. It addresses issues of both theoretical interest and practical importance, thereby aiding our understanding of how people behave, think, interact and communicate in social settings.
The third-year subjects include:
- Human Resource Management
- This course is about Human Resource Management (HRM) strategies, policies and practices. It examines the approach taken by commercial firms and other organisations to recruit, retain and motivate their employees. This includes everything from recruitment and selection techniques (which initiate the relationship between firm and employee) to the formal and informal institutions that determine how employees are managed and to policies on separation (which determine whether, and in what circumstances, employees are to be let go). The course follows the perspective adopted in many HRM textbooks and looks at the subject from an organisational point of view, as well as acknowledging the wide range of factors which shape HRM strategies, policies and practices, including government and regulatory frameworks.
- Principles of Marketing
- This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of marketing and marketing management. The approach taken in this course enables students to gain a broad understanding of the theoretical and practical issues surrounding marketing decision making.
- Asset Pricing and Financial Markets
- This course equips students to understand how financial markets work and how securities are priced. Using present value techniques, it gives a theoretical treatment of bond and stock valuation including portfolio theory and development of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The concept of financial market efficiency is introduced, and evidence for efficiency evaluated. Finally, there is a presentation of derivative pricing using the absence of arbitrage arguments.
- Organisation Theory
- This course explores how organisations can be designed (by management or others) to achieve their objectives. This is an interdisciplinary course drawing centrally upon psychology, sociology, economics and, to a lesser extent, management theory.
