Curriculum
Foundation Course
The objective of this module is to provide all students with an understanding of the basic concepts in mathematics, accounting and the IT tools required for completing this programme. Designed to ensure students of all backgrounds start with similar levels of basic knowledge, the Foundation Course will include sessions in:
Financial Accounting
Covers basic accounting principles and structure of financial statements
Business Math
Basic mathematical and quantitative techniques needed to build a solid base for studying financial techniques
IT Tools
Knowledge of basic IT tools such as MS Excel to ensure that students cope with the analytical rigour of the course
 
Terms
Terms I, II and III cover core courses through compulsory and elective subjects. Core courses provide an in-depth coverage of the key concepts and topics related to finance. Students are provided deeper insight into their choice of track through elective courses in financial planning or wealth management.
Term I
Quantitative Methods for Financial Analysis
The Course introduces the students to the basics of quantitative methods.The Course aims to develop statistical and mathematical skills for financial analysis, including the use of the IT platform. Topics include data analysis & presentation, probability theory & distributions, regression & correlation and index numbers.
Financial Statement Analysis
The objective of this course is to enable the students to read, understand and analyze the financial statements and financial performance of a company. During the course students also learn the preparation of financial statements and basic accounting concepts. This course also covers the International financial reporting standards and their convergence worldwide.
Economics for Financial Markets
This course covers the principles of micro and macro economics analysis with particular reference to economic management and financial markets. Topics include theories of demand, supply, value, factor pricing, economic growth, economic cycles, phenomenon of rational expectations, fiscal and monetary policies.
Mutual Fund Investing
The Course aims to prepare the student for AMFI Mutual Fund Advisors Module Certification exam.The student is exposed to the concept of mutual funds, role taxation issues regarding the mutual fund industry and the role of mutual funds in financial planning.
Introduction to Financial Markets
The course aims at providing an overview of the financial markets to the students. The nature of financial markets and role of different players in the financial markets will be discussed. Students will be exposed to various instruments available in the financial markets. The course will cover capital markets, derivatives markets, insurance markets, etc.and some salient regulations about these markets. A brief overview of the International Financial markets will also be provided.
Term II
Equity & Fixed Income Valuation
This course covers valuation of equity and fixed income securities. Along with the industry analysis, students learn various tools and techniques for valuation of equity like discounted cash flow, relative valuation and asset valuation methods. It also introduces students to the features and characteristics of fixed income securities and the associated risks and concludes with an introduction to analysis and valuation of these securities.
Corporate Finance
This course addresses the three key issues facing every business corporation: investment, financing/dividend and operational decisions. It aims to provide a theoretical framework and used to address issues in project appraisal and financing.
Portfolio Management & Asset Pricing
The Course explores the portfolio management process in the context of individuals and institutions. The course will cover the complete investment process from constructing investment objectives and policies to asset allocation, security selection, revisions, monitoring and performance measurement. Concepts of risk & return and diversification are analysed in the context of formal pricing model such as Capita Asset Pricing Model and the Arbitrage Pricing Theory.
Soft Skills & Business Communications
The course will aim at imparting to the student an ability to handle the soft side of business. The role of the financial advisor as a guide and educator will be emphasized. Special emphasis will be laid on concepts like team management, delegating, apprasing, presenting and motivating.
Derivatives & Alternative Assets
In this course, the basics of various derivative instruments like futures, forwards, options and swaps will be covered. The role played by derivative instruments in risk management, with particular emphasis to portfolio risk, will also be dealt with. The course will also cover alternative asset classes like real estate, commodities etc.
Electives for Wealth Management Track
Risk Management & Insurance Planning
The objective of this course would be to introduce the concept of risk to the student and the role played by insurance companies in managing that risk. Students will be given an exposure to the various risk management products that are offered by insurance companies and the regulatory framework in India regarding the insurance sector.
Electives for Investment Management Track
Financial Reporting and Analysis
This course covers an analysis of inter-corporate investments. The students will learn to understand the comparative financial statement effects that occur from the consolidation of inter corporate investments. They will also learn to analyze the effects on financial ratios of different methods used to account for inter corporate investments. They will be exposed to the classification, measurement and disclosure of International financial reporting standards and US GAAP.
Term III
Electives for Wealth Management Track
Retirement Planning & Employee Benefit
The course will introduce the concept of retirement planning. Various aspects of wealth creation and accumulation will be discussed. Special focus will be laid on the need analysis of people and designing an appropriate strategy for the `golden years'. Concepts of group life insurance and health insurance will also be covered.
Tax & Estate Planning
The course covers tax provisions applicable to individuals. Various tax planning strategies for individuals will be discussed. The student will be exposed to assessment and computation of taxation of trusts, wills, powers of attorney and property documentation are covered.
Marketing of Financial Products
The course covers basic principles of marketing and the differences between product & service marketing. Study of various market segments and client behavior would be covered in order to develop an effective strategy for marketing of financial products.
Advanced Financial Planning
The course aims at imparting sensitivity towards all aspects of financial planning among participants. The course will develop in students an ability to work with investment specialists, ask relevant questions and acquire the background to understand the technical advice provided so that they are able to provide the best advice to clients under complex financial planning situations.
Electives for Investment Management Track
Equity Portfolio Management
This course covers the applications and processes of security analysis and also provides insights on issues that affect security valuation internationally. The students will learn to analyze the industries in a global context and also learn to evaluate the competitive forces that affect returns. It covers use of different models used for valuation in different contexts.
Fixed Income Markets & Bond Portfolio Management
This course provides knowledge and skills needed for valuing fixed income securities. It covers in depth study of structure and characteristics of mortgage backed securities and asset backed markets and securities and concludes with the valuation of these securities.
Corporate Restructuring, Mergers & Acquisitions
In this course students develop an in-depth understanding of the methods for creating value through restructuring. By exploring restructuring strategies from various angles, they will learn how to reposition and revitalize a firm, create new opportunities, and maximize value for shareholders. They will be able to identify situations and its related problems or challenges. They will also learn to use financial valuation and credit analysis to measure the potential value gains available through restructuring.
International Finance
The objective of this course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the international financial system with a view to gauge the risks and opportunities of financial globalization. The main focus of the course will be the financial implications of the rapid integration of national economies worldwide through trade, financial flows and technology spillovers upon the firm's cross-border strategy. The course will assess the impact of economic and financial liberalization as well as structural reforms upon the foreign exchange and financial markets of both advanced and emerging market economies.
Project
In addition to the above subjects, all candidates are required to complete a project under supervision of designated faculty. This is a major component of the course which enables candidates to apply the concepts and principles of wealth management / investment management in a commercial setting. The candidate should be able to demonstrate their technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, client awareness / focus, ethical standards and professionalism in the proper completion of their project.
