The course curriculum focuses on the quantitative aspects of finance and investments, and has an empirical emphasis. The programme consist of four modules:

Principles of Banking & Finance

This module establishes the fundamental concepts in Banking and finance. Students get acquainted with the principles of the finance theory, financial assets, types of financial intermediaries and the ways of their functioning in the modern financial markets.

Financial Reporting

This module is concerned with theory and practice of financial accounting. This involves sound understanding of the concepts and choices that underline measurement and disclosure in financial statements. The aims and objective of this module are to stimulate an enquiry into financial accounting issues, understanding alternative approaches to presentation of financial reports.

  • The rational for financial reporting
  • Conceptual framework for financial reporting
  • Income measurement and capital maintenance
  • Historical cost accounting (HCA) and accounting for change in price/value
  • Accounting for:
    • - Groups and foreign currencies
    • - Tangible non-current assets

  • Accounting for taxation
  • Analysis and interpretation of financial reports

Corporate Finance

This module provides the understanding of asset pricing and corporate finance. It gives a theoretical framework used to address issues in project appraisal and financing, the price of risk, securities valuation, market efficiency, capital structures, and mergers & acquisitions.

  • Risk and Return - CAPM and APT
  • Derivatives assets - characteristics and pricing
  • Efficient markets – theory and empirical evidence

Valuation and Security Analysis

This module provides insight and understanding of security analysis and valuation. It covers three broad areas: financial analysis, security valuation, and returns to fundamental and technical analysis.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to financial statements.
  • The framework of analysis – Industry analysis
  • Financial analysis - Performance evaluation
  • Security valuation: free cash flow, residual earnings, etc.
  • Implication of price-to-earnings and price-to-book ratios
  • Financial information and stock prices
  • Financial analysis of mergers & acquisitions
  • Credit analysis and distress predictions
  • Measuring returns to active investment strategies
  • Returns to fundamental analysis
  • Returns to technical analysis

Duration & Mode of study

Duration:This is a One-Year classroom based programme.

Teaching Style

Courses are taught in lecture and class or seminar format.  Lectures introduce the core theoretical and technical concepts whilst their associated classes allow students to apply these concepts through exercises and in-depth study.  Seminars allow for the focused study of key concepts in a more informal style and often involve presentations by students on selected course materials.  Many teachers adopt a variety of teaching methods to deliver their courses such as lectures, class exercises, team presentations, individual or group work, as well as case study discussions.

Mode of study: One year full-time classroom based programme.

If you are an experienced finance professional or a fresh graduate looking to advance your career, change your area of specialisation, or deepen your knowledge in field of finance, then this is right qualification for you.

Graduates or final year students with a full-time bachelors degree are eligible to apply.Candidates with good undergraduate degrees and good quantitative skills would be preferred.
